RETURN
OF THE BISON Once again bison are being slaughtered. This time Tatanka are being sacrificed by the thousands to accommodate hundreds of noisy snowmobiles that turn majestic Yellowstone Park into a screeching nightmare, frightening the wild roaming bison herd outside the protection of our national park. The Park Service and State of Montana have destroyed over 2,000 bison in the past 3 years, 650 this year alone, and plan to kill more. This is a senseless slaughter to appease ranchers exploiting our national wilderness. Apparently public lands have become entitlements for rich private interests only. License
to steal, granted to cattle barons, has now been expanded to license
to massacre our
bison with the excuse that walking hamburgers are more important than
our natural wildlife. The cover-up
for this slap-in-the-face is the unproven claim that bison infect
cows with brucellosis. The reverse is true. Cattle infect wildlife and should be removed
from our wilderness, just as bison
should be returned to open space.
Excess buffalo should be delivered to Amerindian tribes who have repeatedly asked for them to increase their reservation herds. Cattle grazing must be permanently off limits on public lands in the interest of present and future generations of Americans. Cattle is destructive to the environment while bison improve the land. The public interest must be protected by charging sustaining fees for use of national lands by any business. Voters are becoming aware that corporate interests have bought the government's ear to the detriment of the public good. United Eco-action Fund (UEF) is raising funds throughout the national and international community to create a major Bison Land Trust to be placed under the ecological and cultural guardianship of those American Indian Tribes that have expressed their desire to restore free bison herds and revive the traditional relationship between human beings and Tatanka, the bison forged in ancient times by Wakan Tanka, the Great Mystery.
