On August 25, 1997, United Eco-action Fund wrote to Vice President Al Gore awarding him a prominent position on UNECO's honorable roster of American Wilderness Heritage Guardians in consideration of his great work, Earth in the the Balance: Ecology and the Human Spirit, and in deep gratitude for all he has done and is doing to awaken the planet to a new "environmentalism of the spirit."

As you have pointed out, the burning issue at the dawn of the next millennium is the environmental crisis threatening the foundations of world economy and life itself. History reveals that at the crossing of major datelines collective change becomes possible. Therefore, in the year 2000 the United States will have a singular opportunity to take up your call to lead humanity toward a sustainable future.

 

 

No other cause will challenge American hearts more than one transcending partisan politics and showing that national environmental responsibility means greater prosperity for the people.
